Canterbury’s New Theater Technical Director Robin Frome

Robin Dreeke was Canterbury’s Theater Technical Director for 28 years, so filling his shoes feels a little daunting for Robin Frome, the new Technical Director. But since his name is also Robin, he feels he just might have a leg up!

Mr. Frome comes to Canterbury from the Sherman Playhouse with 26 years of experience in theater. Mr Frome holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in directing and acting from the University of Connecticut as well as a Master of Arts in dramaturgical studies from Wesleyan University.

According to the Sherman Playhouse website, “He has directed over 200 productions ranging from Classical Theater, Children’s Theater, Musicals, Original Works and Contemporary Chestnuts. His directorial credits at the Playhouse include Anne of Green Gables, Talley’s Folly, Arsenic and Old Lace, The Maids, and It’s a Wonderful Life, A Radio Play, Life With Father and Dark of the Moon. In addition to currently heading up the Playhouse, Robin is a private audition tutor to primarily high school students looking to apply for acceptance into collegiate drama programs.”

As the fall theater production is getting underway, Mr. Frome is getting to know the students in the technical theater department.

“The thing I like the most is the students,” he said. “I have never met a group of more positive teenagers ever in my career. They are so humble yet incredibly talented. They are so curious and mature.”

The students themselves are excited to be working with Mr. Frome this year.

“As stage manager I feel that the technical theater director plays a very important part for my role, and the success of the show as a whole,” said Sara Stone ’19. “I found that Mr. Frome has really stepped up well to the role and helped me to start this show on the right foot.”

Welcome Mr. Frome!
